Diabetes Can Be Cured After Weight Loss Surgery

Dr. Carel Le Roux a UK based obesity expert from Vita Clinics, the center for weight management, stated recently that weight loss surgeries through gastric band and gastric bypass also have an added benefit of curing diabetes. He added that weight loss is just a consequence of weight loss surgeries and the real benefits are dramatic improvement in quality of life and the overall health.

Roux said that in a large scale study of 1000 people suffering from Type 2 diabetes who underwent a weight loss surgery, it was found that 83% of the people were cure from the disease. This seems to be a considerable step forward that could help millions of people to get away with the disease. It seems to be a miracle that people who were dependent on insulin for years have gone back home after 48 hours of weight loss surgery absolutely insulin free.

It is important to prevent obesity because Type 2 diabetes is significantly related to obesity. Today generation of adults, without proper medical treatment, will die as many as 9 years earlier due to their obesity. In such circumstance, it is important that people who are suffering from obesity should have access to proven treatment procedures that they really need.

A real life example was Sharon Watterson, a nurse practitioner who had to quit her job due to weight issue. Sharon carried so much weight until she started feeling unwell. She had been suffering from obesity for many years. In the year 2005, she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and the doctors were thinking about putting Sharon on insulin. Ultimately her diabetes disappeared after she underwent the gastric bypass surgery. Sharon says that she has dropped 16 dress sizes after the surgery and she does not need to take diabetes drugs because she is no more suffering from diabetes. She added that getting diabetes-free all at once is really a great feeling.

During the last 2 decades, obesity rates have grown more double and nearly a quarter of men and women are obese in UK. If the statistics continue to follow in the same manner, UK will have 60% of its population suffering from obesity by the year 2050. This means that about two out of people will be obese. At present, over 700,000 UK citizens have weight problem that need medical support.
