Researchers Unveil That Middle-aged Men Are More Likely To Have Diabetes Than Their Female Counterparts

A report released by health charity Diabetes United Kingdom revealed that almost 2.4 percent of men in Britain aged 35 to 54 have diabetes compared to only 1.2 percent of women who are in the same age group. The report also found that around 6 percent of the men in the age group of 45 to 54 suffer from this disease compare to only 3.6 percent women from the same age group. The key figures in the study also highlight that the number of cases suffering from diabetes has risen sharply in men between 35 and 44 years. Over the last 12 years this rate has risen almost four times faster in men compared to the women in the same age group.

When analyzed about the type of diabetes these people have acquired, the statistics show that 90 percent of people have Type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes is linked to factors like diet and physical activity levels that depend on the individual’s lifestyle. Although this condition can also cause by genetic, experts believe that most of the people diagnosed with this problem are obese.

When asked about this condition, Simon O’Neill, director of care at information and advocacy, Diabetes United Kingdom said that it is really worrying that middle-aged men are developing the disease at a greater rate in comparison to their women counter parts. Simon also added that most of the Type 2 Diabetes cases can be easily prevented by following healthy diet habits and also exercising regularly. Simon also warned women that they too need to follow healthy dieting habit and regular exercise as risks of death from dangerous heart diseases that come with Type 2 Diabetes are 50 percent greater in women than in men.

As a step forward in preventing diabetes, experts have requested people around the world to live a healthier lifestyle and to keep an eye on their weight as it is the root cause of Type 2 Diabetes. Research has shown that reducing body weight can reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes by almost 58 percent while regular physical activity can reduce the risk of the disease by almost 64 percent.
