A drug utilized for tackling dementia and other mental maladies in old aged people may be perilous in cases of diabetic. A new research suggests that diabetics in their old age stand greater susceptibility of being hospitalized owing to hyperglycemia if they get started on antipsychotic drugs. Studies suggest that many in the medical fraternity are using antipsychotic drugs for curing dementia and other issues related to behavior. Antipsychotic drugs are known for a number of risks. These include heightened chances of stroke, diabetes, and symptoms akin to Parkinson’s. Also, worthwhile to note is the fact that patients tend to incline towards hyperglycemia. Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a research glanced at the chances of hospital visit in consequence of the effects of hyperglycemia in elderly with diabetes. The time span pertaining to the research fell between 2002 and2006. The study looked at 13817 people among which it found 11 percent of the people to be hospitalized with diabetic ketaacidosis, hyperglycemia or hyperosmolar coma. The study spelt out conclusive risks of antipsychotic medication suggesting that those who undertook these medicines were 50 percent more likely to be hospitalized for hyperglycemia than those who have stopped on these medications some 180 days in advance. Fresh starters of antipsychotic drugs manifest the risk most. It also showed that hyperglycemia cases increased in elderly diabetics no matter what type of antipsychotic drug used. Typical antipsychotic drugs and atypical antipsychotic drugs form two distinct groups of such drugs. Haldol belongs to the first category whereas Seroquel, Zyprexa and Risperdal belong to the second category. Although it is not conclusive yet it is more or less stamped by the researchers that antipsychotic therapy can be critical for elderly diabetics. Researcher Lorraine L. Lipscombe and colleagues fell that other options for tackling dementia like symptoms should also be considered when treating old age diabetics. |
